Joe Dirt 2: Beautiful Loser (2015)
I wouldn't put this dirt in my garden.
I was not a huge fan of the first Joe Dirt, but I will admit that it had a few funny moments. I went into this one expecting the same quality of humor and a story that would keep my attention nearly two hours. What I got? Well, I'll tell you.
The movie starts off with a scene that involves a bunch of lumberjacks and a scantily clad female lumberjack farting on Joe one by one, while insulting him verbally. There really wasn't anything funny about it, unless you are a teenager. I love raunchy comedies, but juvenile bodily function jokes are not amusing when it goes on for 5 minutes.
The movie continues with stereotypical high school humor from there on. We are talking about "Popcorn Surprise" which is sticking ones gentiles through the bottom of a popcorn tub to testicle jokes continually.
While there were a few funny moments, such as when he meets up with Buffalo Bob again the rest of the movie falls flat. The story is somewhere between generic teenage comedy and a b rated SyFy movie considering the time travel aspect.
I would not recommend this movie to anyone who is not a juvenile at least in mindset. It is less than lackluster, despite the few chuckles I did have.
Flaked (2016)
Six Degrees of Humor and Heart
I saw this on Netflix, I decided to give it a chance. So I watched the first episode and I was shocked at how good it really is. This is not slapstick humor nor is it over the top. The lead role is Chip, he is a 40 something guy who runs a stool shop in downtown Venice. He is a troubled individual who simply survives life. He is a recovering alcoholic with a tragic past and yet he chooses to endure even if his existence is not entirely humorous. There is a great deal of emotion with the characters, including his roommate Dennis and his love interest London.
While the shows situations don't always fit into place, it is like watching those people you know in real life as an adult but don't associate with because they don't fit into your lifestyle. This is truly like walking a mile in the shoes of a mans life that is worth watching.
9/10
Jem and the Holograms (2015)
Average at best
I will start out by saying that I was excited to see this. I enjoyed the cartoon. I just bought this movie and watched it. I can honestly say this is not the same Jem that many older folks know and love. This is watered down and is awful as far as adaptations go. However as a stand alone movie, without the title that made me have a set of expectations. This is not a horrible movie, nor is it good.
The movie has some good music in it. Aubrey Peeples definitely has a voice that is to die for. The storyline is recycled but still done in a fresh enough manner that it is fun. The acting is sub par and it reminded me of a made for TV ABC movie. I would not say "Go spend 20 bucks on it" but it is worth watching, especially if you have children and want to watch a family movie. I hate Hannah Montana but most young girls love it, just like they will love this.
I give it a B- or 5/10 Let go of your expectations and just sit back and spend 2 hours not thinking too hard.
The Way Way Back (2013)
An intelligent, inventive and heartwarming story of personal growth.
I did have high hopes for this movie after having seen the trailer, it seemed to categorically fit into place with movies like Juno, The perks of being a wallflower and many others. I was not mistaken it turned out to be a movie with a great deal of laughs, some moments where you can not believe people would ever be so cruel to a child and others where you see the main character grow.
The main character starts out as a meek and shy young man, and through a series of events over a summer learns how to blossom and become someone that he never thought he could. The story has aspects of family considering this all takes place on a family vacation, but also has aspects of friendship and pretty much keeps the romance at a minimum thankfully as it would have taken away from the rest of the story.
All in all this film was worth watching and not just once, if you are a fan of the dry comedy and movies which tell a story worth knowing you will love this movie! I know I did.
The American (2010)
George Clooney's Guide to Sex, Guns and Butterflies!
This film was the first movie I have ever gone to see where the entire theater laughed at the ending. The movie starts out with Jack in bed with a woman. It then cuts to them walking in the snow and finding footprints. It goes on to him killing a sniper, telling the woman to go call the police and then killing her as well, then killing one more person.
The film continues with sporadic cut scenes and little to no dialogue. You really don't get a feel for the character other then he has an affinity for prostitutes, making silencers, talking to a priest who has a supposed child. He is paranoid, and the plot makes no sense, he also has a sick and twisted love for butterflies which is never explained, and oh yeah he dies at the end and the movie is over.
Really this movie sucked worse then public enemies, and even worse then Pam Anderson.
