The Fall of the House of Usher (2023)
Bruce Greenwood deserves an emmy
I enjoyed pretty much everything about this series. The creative way the Poe stories were integrated to each episode and then tied all together with one big Usher bow. Just great.
However, the standout for me was Bruce Greenwood's performance. He, to me, really rose above the rest. I think it lies within the fact that he played against what we normally see from him: strong, stoic, often aloof characters. Seeing him as a sometimes pathetic soul: crying, crawling on the ground in terror, etc. Was fresh, unexpected and played perfectly (In my not so humble opinion). This will be a Halloween season classic for me from now on. Loved it.
El aviso (2018)
I enjoyed it.
Nice little cosmic-time-warp mystery.
Kept me guessing throughout and the pay off was good enough to leave me satisfied.
No tour de force but a nicely paced, scripted, well acted and over all entertaining film.
Truth or Dare (2018)
Truth - it is actually pretty good. Dare - for you to see it for what it is...
Which is a horror movie that is trying to to be nothing more than a piece of entertainment for an hour and a half. Accomplished.
It also succeeds at being pretty creepy at times and not overly cliche.
That goes a long way in my book these days!
Being a huge horror fan: I enjoyed it quite a bit.
Geostorm (2017)
Hey, just turn the audio off!
Nah, actually it is still stupid without the audio.
Gerard Butler looks like he's been hitting the bottle a little hard lately.
Ok, really hard. What happened there? And don't say age - he's three years YOUNGER than I am and looks like my father. Jeez! Go to rehab for god's sake!
Who wears a leather jacket and jeans in Florida? Covering something up Gerard?
That aside -
I seriously cringed at the terrible dialog and piecemeal plot. It made my stomach ache. Ugh!
I actually felt sorry for the actors. But they got paid.
Glad I grabbed this from the library and didn't spend money on this heap.
Whoo - stinker.
Two stars for the effects.
Annihilation (2018)
Give it a whirl.
It is strange about all the hate shoveled on this movie.
It was better than Arrival and Life. Similar to both in some respects.
Visually stunning. At times tense and frightening.
Explores several themes and raises more questions.
Has me pondering some of them still.
Overall an entertaining movie that was worth my time and money.
Yeah, I'll go back and watch it again at some point.
Red Sparrow (2018)
Who are you haters?
I am completely baffled by all the haters of this movie.
It is totally watchable! It is, in fact, quite good. And I watch a LOT of movies.
I don't review many but I felt I had to get on here and try and put some of this negativity to rest.
While it is not the best movie in the world, it does NOT deserve all these terrible ratings and/or reviews. One of the final scenes was predictable but, hell, it was still better than Atomic Blonde!
Seriously, I am glad I took a chance and ignored all the hate and was satisfactorily entertained for a change. That seems hard to come by these days!
At the end of the day; it is a pretty darn good spy thriller.
I hope this is helpful.
