Ya uchitel (2016)
A good film set in an occupied Russian village
I enjoyed this film. The first 4 minutes is 16mm footage taken by a German soldier in occupied Russia, presumably on his private movie camera. It's silent, so it's not your typical newsreel fare with an excitable narrator. I thought they did a good job all around; the story was believable as were the characters. The setting is an occupied village in Russia; you get the impression that the Germans have been there a while and life has a new norm to it. Any more and I'd be spoiling it for you; bottom line is that if you're a fan of WWII-related films, you should enjoy this one.
August Light: Wilson's Creek and the Battle for Missouri (2010)
Worthwhile watch for civil war enthusiasts
This film is primarily narrated reenactment, supplemented by things like snippets from the diaries of those who fought and writings of those who survived the war. Animated maps too; helpful for those of us not familiar with the area. The film starts with the buildup of Missouri militarily as the war got rolling, and ties in to the so-called border war recently fought in the area. Things firm up and ultimately lead to the battle itself, the second major battle of the war itself. I thought they did a very good job, especially the reenactors (who were probably glad to do it.)
5 per l'inferno (1969)
Spaghetti War Film
1969 music. Gymnastics. Softball (as a weapon.) Tap dancing. Very much like a spaghetti western except it's a WWII flick. Giving it a 5 because it's hardly a classic but I've seen worse. They actually did a good job with the weapons, uniforms, and vehicles. Sure, there are some nits to pick, but I give these guys credit for at least trying. The plot details were a bit fuzzy but the film gives you all the basics you'd expect for a raid. The dubious goal almost gave it a sci-fi feel at points. Kudos too in that the Germans actually spoke German, although the number of Germans with Hitler mustaches exceeded the allowed quota in the realm of believable cinema.
