Night Shift (2023)
It was pretty decent until the halfway mark
I love indie films, this one started off pretty good, got hooked on the storyline, the actors were good, this actor Lamorne Morris was really believable and I figured the production for this film was decent.
What threw me off abit was that the plot seemed to be going into a supernatural direction yet kept introducing new characters halfway that didn't seem related to what I initially thought was the main plot. This was when I knew the conclusion of this movie was going to take a left turn and have some unexpected plot twist at the end.
This movie was a mixed bag of nuts, there were some scares, comedy, thriller elements all rolled into one. It's not terrible but the writing wasn't cohesive enough.
Shark Bait (2022)
Shark airtime was less than 10mins total.
I like shark movies. The cgi for this shark was pretty good. It looked realistic. However for some reason the director decided on a lot of underwater looking up at flailing bodies. Shark kills were quick and gory. Failing bodies in the water were drawn out and boring. I forwarded a lot to get to the shark scenes. Would not recommend.
Hold the Dark (2018)
The cinematography was excellent
This movie had one of the best outdoor shooter scenes I've watched in a long time. A lone gunman takes out an entire towns police force. Other than that I don't understand what the movie was about. A man who's a wolf expert comes to town to investigate the disappearance of a child suspected of being taken by wolves. The child is not taken by wolves. His mom runs away. His dad dons a wolf mask and starts to kill a lot of people. They all meet in a cave in the end and mom and dad of the disappeared child run off into the wilderness and the wolf man expert lands in hospital and reconnects with his estranged daughter. That's the entire movie right there. I just saved you from watching it.
Apostle (2018)
It's weird (spoilers)
This movie confused me on so many levels. So many unanswered questions and plot holes! I get it's some kind of allegory about faith and belief and how men will fall to corruption no matter their best intentions. There were a lot of unnecessary side plots that didn't make an impact to the overall main plot line. There is a Godess on this island. Who is she, what is she about, how she came to being, all these go unanswered... she is a goddess that gives life yet is so easily imprisoned by mortal men? What was that creature man with the head wrap about? Is she some kind of vampire? Why does she need blood and how come she can seem to move around freely in some scenes but at the end she was so pathetic? Why did they use so much fake blood and what's with the long drawn out torture scenes? This was not a terrible movie- it did keep me interested until the last half hour till all was revealed at the end- but it was so damn unsatisfying. It kind made me feel like they were trying to do something like Bone Tomahawk- you were learning the plot as the movie progressed and you didn't have to know too much about the 'creatures' because you were rooting for the human protagonists the whole way. However in this movie the entire story was centred around a cult and religion and their 'diety' was kind of integral to the entire plot line yet they kept that part of the origin kind of obscure and fuzzy, you couldn't quite wrap your mind around understanding how or why their cult came into existence! All you see is that it was about a rescue. Rescue from a cult led by some men that were trying to accomplish what exactly? A utopia? A commune? Their own country? Just a strange 2hr movie. Good cinematography and acting though. Watch only if you're a dedicated horror fan.
