How to downgrade a great novel
4 May 2024
Tom Wolfe was a great writer, Regina King is a good actress but a mediocre director. She fell for the standard American pitfalls: overacting, caricatures in stead of people, not one person seems really credible. It's well shot though. Daniels accent is ridiculous and he is obviously no Kevin Spacey... and this way a great novel is almost ruined. It was a good idea to film this, obviously as an anti-Trump flick, but the way its done is al little saddening, a bit like the Woman King nonsense (the celebrated female warriors in this silly movie were no heroes at all but part of a cruel slavery ring run by the Dahomey, that started long before the Europeans started their cruel and dark share in the already existing business). Anyway, dissapointing. There's no need for yet another director who falls for the standard American mediocre, cliche-like, over-the-top way of portraying stories...

Extremely interesting story about humanity, relationships, love...

Extremely interesting story about humanity, relationships, love...

Complex story about being a human, with desires, expectations, purpose, disappointments, taking eachother for grated, and the ever existing conundrum between authenticity and the tendency to please, go along with, or betray oneself.

Being alive is not merely about existing. It's also not just about consuming or entertaining yourself or about making a living. It's not even just about the pursuit of happiness - which seems rather childish to me, by the way. As if everything has to be 'fun'. No, to be alive is (also) to act. And to try to become what you are, as Nietzsche said. To be able to do that we have to shed our skin, several times. To 'come to the world', several times as Heidegger pointed out. 'Cos not everything is already there or 'the case' just because you've been born.

And how we act has a profound influence on ourselves and others, and therefore on society as well - even if it is on Mars or whatever.

So, when we become or remain emotionally incompetent (afraid to feel things fully), we will tend to avoid all kinds of unpleasant sensations, and thereby unconsciously train ourselves to be runners, avoiders and supressors. We basically train ourselves to betray ourselves most of the time. We will also try to control other peoples behavior, to avoid unpleasant feelings. In doing so we surrender our authenticity, our truthfulness, and in fact our real worth as a human entity - willfully blind at first maybe and somewhat forced by others as well, but after some time even without really noticing. We basically become liars. Fake(r)s. We will start to give in to others, more than is healthy (both for us and for them). And we will rationalize and hide behind (false) stories, half truths or even cloud ourselves in 'moral' theories - which in fact are all excuses or sales pitches. (Picture a person, bible in his/her hand - telling lies)....

Nice enough but as usual with many US movies full of caricature and too-much-ness
21 January 2024
Someone wrote: "Amsterdam comes roaring out of the gate with a fast-paced, quirky, charming, and unique mystery of the likes of Sherlock Holmes or Knives Out."

Ja, and all of these kind of US films suffer from the same thing: caricatures in stead of people, over the top in stead of really smart or witty. Its never above the level of a 6-7... US actors are usually that way, for (educated) Europeans rather unreal, comic book like, effect driven, too much...

"The list of celebrities and actors continues to grow as almost every face in this movie is another a-lister making an entertaining appearance."

Which doesn't equal 'great acting'. Great acting is, in my opinion, that the actors make u forget there is acting going on - in many US movies, one always sees the acting (especially with the likes of mr. Rock, a standard caricature, like his role in Rustin...)

too bad, the movie is watchable, sometimes funny, or creative - the artwork is nice enough... but great movie? No. An 8 or 9, hilarious....

" Amsterdam had so much potential but floundered in its attempts to be different and unique. The film's best part was Michael Shannon and Mike Myers' quirky bird-loving spies." Yeah, that was funny, in an american way....

Christian Bale logged another amazing performance, as expected.

I agree, he was on a role...

oke, enough about this. Gonna watch KIN - a great series with real acting as i like to see it...

Different and interesting - not for superficial binging minds maybe
2 December 2023
People who only want to see the same over and over again might not want to see this, as well as ones that like blockbuster-slickness or over the top stuff. It's part mystery, part art, part weirdness, and about how one thing can lead to another (control or free will are an illusion). Interesting movie - maybe not brilliant but to rate it a 1 or 2 says more about the shallowness of the reviewers and raters than it does say anything about the film itself... well acted, interesting, slightly disturbing... watch it unless you have a mind that is totally mediocre... or worse. It's full of chance, interaction, mistakes, human nature, obsession, creativity, and how things can go wrong..

Could have been great
5 October 2023
Malick is an exceptional film maker, that much we know, and is clear in this movie. However, when one is over stretching a piece of music or film, something gets lost. It should have been cut to two hours, and a little less praying would have been good...

Too bad he love this project too much to cut out what was obviously unnecessary superfluous - a good story told too slow and lengthy.

The setting and themes, or questions asked, are interesting enough...

Great acting, good story, beautifully shot - but way too long - hence the 7.

How Great America gets these days...
21 September 2023
The US is getting way ahead of the rest of the world, and not just in this series, but also in highly acclaimed series like Damages or Perpeption, in portraying humans as copies of copies. Stereotypical, superficial, hypocritical, shallow, bland, stale etc.

This show starts off the same way. The acting is oke (for US standards that is - which means you can sometimes believe they not acting, while with real actors u never think they are acting, right?). The shallowness is mind numbing, equality shouldn't be about everybody getting equally shallow I would hope. Feminisme of antiracism should be out freeing people to strat to really do what they want to do, instead of coping what the white guys and bourgeois white women think what it means to be successful. It's all so utterly boring... However the show is funny sometimes, shows there is no black community or sisterhood (as anyone with a brain could already know), the rest is well... predictable... It's not bad, so 5 stars for the effort... gonna watch something good now, something European... with real people in it in stead of these caricatures...

Stray wars, it just keeps getting worse - they're really spinning 'off'
7 September 2023
It's not the actress, she's usually fine. But these spinoffs are quite terrible. Star Wars was always problematic, however it succeeded to create a universe, and salute to that. These spinoffs don't cut it though, they seem to striving to emulate the wordt of the original sequence... luckily many people seem to love it. But in times where stuff like Stranger things or Fleabag get great ratings my sense is that everybody has turned into a fouteen year old American overnight. Whatever, not for me, too infantile and unoriginal. "Vesper" is way more interesting for instance, and there's more out they're that's inspiring or creative - but not this quite boring mess...

Atmospheric drama, not an average horror flick
3 May 2023
Agree with another review, it is beautifully shot, well situated and acted. If you want fast pasted action/gore this might not be for you

It's not a tension builder and by no means a horror or thriller it's mostly drama, beautiful setting in gorgeous Dublin Ireland. The castle is a nice setting as well for a slower paced but worth watching drama with a little mystery throw in. Excellent cast and well directed not an oscar winner but a very good movie with an excellent ending!!

It is beautifully shot, well situated and acted. If you want fast pasted action/gore this might not be for youit is beautifully shot, well situated and acted. If you want fast pasted action/gore this might not be for you.

Very long docu on a very troubled and boring talent
17 March 2023
Man, wat a drag this was. Clapton was a brilliant guitarplayer, but a better drinker and heroineshooter than a songwriter... Everyone in this film is doing their best to make it seem that he did great work in the '70-s except: he didn't. The odd good song or show here and their, among a ton of uninspiring and lazy stuff, and sappy albums... OMG... don't watch this unless u're a real Claptonette... I was ill so i suffered through it, but it made feel worse I'm afraid. He should have been the lead guitar player i a solid band, and just sing occasionally... like on Layla... anyway, i'm sorry, never was that much into clapton and this docu didn't help at all...

So no, cut it back to 45 minutes, for the fans...

14 February 2023
Gave it an 8 because of he nonsense reviews, it's a decent 7. Yes there a some problems, but nevertheless a good performance and fine to watch. So, never mind the people who rate it with a 1 or two, they clearly didn't understand much...

another could have been series
3 September 2022
Ya, hm, the plot sounded interesting enough, but a few minutes in we started to get annoyed: these full-blown, fake, unbelievable american people... terrible. After ten minutes one hopes that a zombie comes along and kills 'm all, so it would be done and dusted. Luckily we remembered where the off-switch was. Same thing - for us - with many US production, phony people, silly scenes, unoriginal dialogues, cheesy acting, hardly getting beyond a mediocre soap level of 'acting'... so no thanx, we'll watch something good instead.

Too bad. Better to watch some Scandinavian stuff, or something like Ozark for that matter, which was great.

And yet another American over the top and extremely silly movie
23 July 2022
The USA keeps just going with these over the top exaggerated unhuman, super hero BS - Marvell stuff and action movies like this show the extreme shallowness and ant-creativity of the USA - unoriginal, unworldly, unrealistic, bigger than life, simpleton stuff, that's what they love. Tells us Europeans a lot about the American common mind i'm afraid... Terrible movie, unless you're another 14 year old with ADHD. Sorry, bout the bad review, it's obviously shot well enough, but if you want a story and actual acting and something 'human' there is so much material that's way, wat better...

Like most US movies: too much, too easy plus some nice & funny bits
24 December 2021
Well, a bunch of stars, larger than life & over the top stuff, some fun, lot's of cliche's, greed, superficiality, flat characters and so on. Fun to watch though (some parts anyway), and quite accurate in some respects: the shallow greediness, political interests and the stuff that people have themselves sucked into through social media... Pfff It's a sad and beautiful world I guess.

Gonna read a good book, i think.

One of the best shows EVER
17 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This is classic, great, smart, layered, excellently performed and written (except the dream parts maybe). One of the best shows ever, with Breaking Bad and Dexter, Rectify, (and Better call Saul - I Guess), ... that is, if u don't mind some politically incorrect yet very effective and sometimes funny violence, irony, smart mouthing, crazy religious stuff (well, that's always crazy, this iron age shit still poisoning the world) muscle, great lyrics etc etc... To me: this stuff: it's ART... To ban Gandolifni died... and too bad there were no follow up movies... etc. (Llllyhammer was also funny though). Enjoy - rerun - watch, watch again... this is how you make great stuff - without the cheesy americanisms and mediocre acting and the childish sentimentality that are usually on sale in the US - us Europeans see right through that - usually Americans are acting, and u can tell... it's insincere, fake, over the top, unreal, but this show and the others mentioned are fantastic. THANX.

And another American cliche: Boem Boem, sentimental bad dialogues, bad science, boem boem
12 July 2021
Yep that's USA all right: boem boem, crappy science, boem boem, cheesy dialogue, boem boem, bad science, unlikely events, some more sentimental lyrics, some more helicopters and guns blazing... Man, boring US BS... Favorite line in this 'film': kill 'm all... BOem boem bang bang,

It's clear that a slow film, a psychological film, is hard to bear for some, especially for adrenaline junkies i guess. Excellent performance by Pitt, well shot, great atmosphere and sad (but accurate) notions about us, humans... plus some bad science of course now and again... No film for teenagers or empty people

Why in English?, feels odd and artificial, too bad. It seems to influence the acting, making it worse than necessary. Disappointing. Also: why placed in present time? Feels like using 'wallander' to make something totally unconnected attract undeserved attention. too bad...
