Monpti (1957)
City of love and ...
Well Paris especially is known for being the city of love .. and I reckon in this case also the city of young beautiful people trying to impress each other - not always with the truth mind you. Romy Schneider is best known for her role as Sissi - obviously she has done way more movies, this being another one. She was quite beautiful - and her partner (in lying?) crime is Horst Buchholz, whom I know from the Magnificent Seven movie.
Now I don't think this little movie that could will be seen by many people and maybe it will play more of fans of one or both of those actors. But it is nicely told and the story does make sense overall. Hurdles sometimes are a bit .. well self inflicted, but the chemistry of both leads is there and can be felt. This may or may not be your cup of tea - it is a decent movie/drama/love story for sure.
Gwimul (2021)
Trying to find it
The good or the evil? Or is it maybe both? In any case it is no pun intended as always. The show is a bit long, but with all the twists and turns, it does need the time to unfold. So you may need a bit of patience (and suspension of disbelief, but that is a given of sorts) to go through it, but you will be rewarded with a really good tv show for it.
That all said, the acting is top notch, the story is sometimes a bit hard to follow, but you will never lose interest or the plot - characters seem to change their behavior or rather their mood/actions, but this is only perception. The relationships uncovered, the secrets buried (literally and otherwise) are quite something to behold. The score (sound) is also very well, not just for show, but generally speaking.
Yes it goes to crazy town at times - but it never leaves this planet - if that makes sense(?) ... maybe just in my head, but I think you got what I am trying to say.
Silverton Siege (2022)
You gotta fight ... for your right .... to ...
Freedom? I reckon no pun intended - definitely not party! Not in this case - what I did not know: this is based on actual events! A Dog Day Afternoon kind of thing then - not Attica though, in case you were wondering - but Mandela is more than a good substitute to "fight for".
But does a good cause excuse wrongdoings? Sometimes it seems you have to do something that can be considered illegal ... morally things may not be always clear, but that will be up to you to decide how you feel about it and our main characters. I think most will have some sympathy for them ... that said, it is not just clear cut. We do have some twists - and they did surprise me, well some of them did.
A good movie overall about a story that should be more widely known ... or maybe it is and I am in the minority. Whatever the case, decent movie for sure.
Yentl (1983)
Gentle?
No pun intended - my Yiddish is not the best as you can tell - well actually that may not be entirely true. While I am not able to decipher that language I think it is easy to tell that Barbara or her character is female. Especially considering the times this was made - I mean I reckon nowadays one could go with the "identifies as". And I don't mean that disparaging or anything like that. Letting people express themselves is always a good thing - you don't always have to understand it.
It does get a bit complicated, especially considering all the relationships - quite close ones. People wanting to get intimate, not knowing who (s)he really is. The movie may be a bit too long, but the really good acting and the engaging story do help getting you along (for the ride) ...
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (2024)
King is dead - long live the King
No pun intended - we are talking Ceasar here! And I really need to re-watch the original movies again. But the new movie series that may or may not end with this one, is really well told and done. Especially the visual and sound effects are just amazing to say the least. I did watch it in Atmos, so maybe there was a bit more "oomph" than normally ... but yes they really use a wide range - and you can hear it (no pun intended).
We get thrown into a new world - a world where it seems that (wo)man has lost ... entirely. But you can't make a movie like this without having a homo sapiens! She is even on the poster - and you do not have to have eagle eyes (or claws for that matter) to realize that she is different than the humans (echoes) that are described in the movie.
There may be not too much story in this, but the social implications, the moral complexity this shows ... it is incredible actually. It really goes places and it does not give easy answers! You want to root for someone - and our main character/ape is the one to go obviously ... but is he too soft, too gullible? There are quite a few things that go back to the survival game ... as if there couldn't be a live together ... the movie is showing us quite the horrors ... things we have done ... things we continue to do I reckon ... so there is more to this than the surface is showing ... very well made (in many respects)
Young Frankenstein (1974)
Where Wolf?
The movie tells us (well Igor to be exact), where it is - but do not worry, you won't actually see it. So pun intended as always! With a movie of the next generation - not that Gene Wilder appreciates his bloodline ... his grandfather ... but with a legacy like that, can you blame him? Of course that ... legacy is something one cannot escape so easily.
This movie is 50 years old now ... but it looks way older ... by design by the way (and again no pun intended here either). This was made to look like the Frankenstein monster movies that were originally made. Black and white, cinematography, sound design, make up and effects that will remind you of very old movies.
I am quite certain that one can find many nods to the original films (yes not just the first Frankenstein movie) with repeating viewings. Hairdos included (male and female alike) - the movie does start with a throwback too. The credits that start the movie, the soundtrack .... it all could be a "normal" Frankenstein movie and not a comedy.
Of course the inciting incident (heritage from Frankenstein - by the way how do you spell that? Yes a running joke throughout the movie) has some fun to it. But still the silliness is yet to come. Also the fourth wall that is being torn down - you could say it is non existent ... you do not have to know any other movies to enjoy what is going on of course. You may take a bit more away if you do - I would not be surprised if you decide to give some classic movies a chance! Yes there are quite a few of them, but this won't be too big ... a challenge for you! And yes that was another pun - there is quite a bit of innuendo in the movie - it should not be an issue or worry you of course.
The next generation is here to take over - talk about ... "crossover" (I'll end with this pun - take that in ... and sing with joy)
The Train (1964)
My precious
Well sort of and no pun intended - we are talking about a train full of ... well I reckon you could call it treasure. It is the end of the German Reich and while many things were destroyed by them during their regime .. some things were supposed to be saved (from bombing and the "enemy" = which of course in history were the good guys, not only trying but succeeding in stopping Nazi Germany) ... and the movie has a train full of them.
Good actors, good cinematography even if it is black and white, which I hope you do not mind watching. The tension is there and the movie is edited very well indeed too. Maybe not an instant classic for most, but still a very good movie that is filled with tension ... and a few really good stunts too!
T.I.M. (2023)
Totally intelligent Male
That is what Tim stands for, yes? No? Well no pun intended of course. Artificial intelligent - there are a lot of people (scientists) that say that movies are being unfair or portray it in a wrong way - I mean they are trying to make entertainment ... and yet they do hit a nerve. We are kind of skeptical ... how will that work? How will we deal with a "machine" that looks life like? Won't we treat it differently too? We already assign human traits to animals but also objects we love and cherish.
So it is not a big step or leap to see us ... well having conflicted feelings about "robots". And maybe that goes the other way around too ... and that is something the movie plays upon. I'd say you can guess where the movie is going - but it still is a fun ride, as predictable as it may be ... Nice science fiction, decent acting.
The Naked City (1948)
Totally dressed up
No pun intended - when this movie was made, the censorship was quite strong. You couldn't show certain things, sometimes not even imply them. But the movie is good in making you believe the crime(s) and maybe even see them (even when you don't, like punch/hit from our main bad guy towards the end, that is happening off camera) ... that said, the voice over can be a bit annoying.
And you may not be used to it - I reckon it was made to guide the viewers. I can imagine it was also used in the tv show this sparked many years later (which I haven't seen yet). The whodunnit is really engaging and the way the police works is quite nice to see. It takes time, some things may happen a bit conveniently, but it still is a movie after all.
Good acting, good editing and good cinematography. How do you do? Or rather how did they do ... very good I'd say ... though of course certain things have aged - see the back projection stuff (when they drive cars), but you have that with all movies of a certain age and era ... so just suspend your disbelief and go with the flow ... and try to guess what is going to happen next too.
The Honeymoon (2022)
Worst criminals (ever)
No pun intended - but this was quite frustrating ... I know this is supposed to be funny .. I know this is supposed to be feelgood and to a degree nice ... also a bit of a fairy tale (very unconvincing but still) ... and I also am aware this is a movie and suspension of disbelief is a thing .. and yet I am being very nice here ... because the degree this annoyed is beyond any scale I could come up right now.
I try to avoid giving movies a 1 star - like they have to be really bad and I have to revisit some of my 1s, where I might have been a bit too harsh. And yes this does look good cinematography wise and for the "story" it has and the "humor" it uses, the acting is fine. You can't blame the actors for the faults of the script or direction.
Since comedy is in the eye of the beholder and maybe some will feel very silly and won't mind characters that most other would like to see be gone (or sleep with the fishes or whatever other euphemism you want to use) ... but be wary and aware what this is. I reckon the best friend (and seriously with friends like this - better shoot yourself - I am kidding of course! No violence please!) is a comedian in real life ... and he probably is a very funny and sweet Dude ... but the character he portrays here ... please refrain from hitting yourself (therefor also hurting yourself) when you watch the ... supposedly "hilarious" things he is doing ... which should drive anyone nuts.
I totally understand people just creating an account to let off some steam - even the ones who did not endure this to the bitter (sweet) end! And beyond - because apart from some set photos ... we also get a bonus scene that has nothing to do with the movie and actually may be the sweetest thing the movie has to offer - a real life ... let's call it incident and the reason I opted to go 3 instead of 2 (which would have been deserved). Any moment that tried to capture any good will in the movie is forced - this was natural ... and real.
Predictable and really annoying from the moment it begins and fumbles (quite literally) through the end ... and the "excuse" why the best friend is tagged along is laughable ... which it shouldn't be, considering what the implications would be in real life ... again, so much that is wrong here ... let's end it here, been writing for too long anyway - kind of like the movie that should have ended after 10 minutes ... no life lesson learned - and way too convenient in tying up "lose" ends ... and again, criminals that do not deserve to be called that ... I know it's supposed to be funny ... but as with almost everything else it fails ... like I failed to stop writing like I said ... but I will now! Enough ... no puns intended.
El norte sobre el vacío (2022)
Empty in all directions (?)
No pun intended - sometimes words do not mean what you (I) may think they mean. I thought vacio means vacation - couldn't be more wrong as I found out (means something in the vain of empty). Now the movie itself is anything but empty (doesn't mean you may feel a kind of emptiness while/during or after watching the movie) ... no matter the direction you watch it from (norte means north).
The movie is quite harsh - feels like reality and the life of our characters is not easy. And authorities are not making it easier for them - actually the opposite is the case. Sometimes life can be frustrating - and the movie does show some of those times - is that another pun? Well anyhow, the movie is really well done and a small jewel of sorts ...
Ingeborg Bachmann - Reise in die Wüste (2023)
Dry journey
No pun intended - yes I took the (German) title and made a joke of sorts. The movie itself is more serious than that of course. I do wish I had taken the title itself a bit more serious. Because this is a real life person and I should have done some homework I suppose. Most American movies work without you knowing anything, but in this case ... it would have made sense.
Great acting and I assume at least some snippets of truth of the "players". It may be a bit of a dry watch (was not joking about that), but the story is well told. You can feel the struggle and the issues of our main character and what she has to go through ... emotionally. A drama that will speak to some more than to others ... especially I reckon to those who know more than myself.
The Starling Girl (2023)
Love Him
No pun intended - obviously if you are religious you know that you do not only worship God, but you also love him. Depending on your devotion, you only love him and not anyone else (with your body and soul) ... what if He is represented by someone you dig though? Now I am putting it ... well I may describe it in a very casual way, but the movie is quite easy to decipher ... and predictable I'd say.
No brownie points then for guessing most things. The acting is good though and you kind of feel for the gullible main character. She sort of can't help herself. The story also really tries to be as respectful to everyone - which I think is a good thing and they mostly achieve it. It feels like a real story - real life. And I would not be surprised if this happened somewhere exactly like it is portrayed ... not an easy movie to watch, because of what you can already guess (where it will lead you) ... but more than decent for sure.
Unbelievable (2019)
Inconceivable
No pun intended - and certainly not in any way connected to Princess Bride. If you know, you know - if not do not worry about it. Instead worry about what the show is showing us. This is not even accusing one particular person (not from the start, culprit has to be found) .. and yet the victim has to ... go through a lot.
The first episode sets the tone and is a "great" way to bring us into the mindset and show us what happens after an (alleged) assault - had to put the alleged in there, but watching this you realize that what (mostly) women have to go through, to tell their stories, to tell what has been done to them ... well it is quite something! And something that is not to be taken lightly ... talk about reliving a horrible experience.
Great acting, incredible stories ... this was made for a reason ... and we can only hope that sometime in the future we stop at least victim blaming ... the least that should happen! No one wants or begs for that ... and no one deserves it either ...
The Final: Attack on Wembley (2024)
Battle lost
No pun intended - I don't know if another title would be more appropriate ... but I reckon we have to work with what we get! I do understand that England and its fans had quite a lot to look forward too. It is 2024 and there the Champions League final is in Wembley - but no English team is going to be there to challenge for the trophy (you got a German and a Spanish team left).
But a couple of years ago, the national team was able to reach the finals. Against Italy - one game, everything is possible! But the structure .. the way things were prepared seem in hindsight to not have been the best.
If you know the outcome (and I knew who had won the game, but only remembered while watching what occurred after the game was over), you may not be too surprised ... but we get interviews and snippets from the day and the days leading up to it. I still think as already said that the title can be perceived as a bit deceiving ... but that aside, it is horrible what some "fans" did after the final ... you win and you lose together! I reckon some things will never change ... and with social media giving certain people a platform ... well it won't be changing in the near future.
Let's try to spread love - even in the time of "defeat" ... not easy to do, but better to stick together and give each other some comfort, rather than spread hate ... which should be a take away from this, not sure if it really is done in a way, you feel it serves that message .. or any message of that kind.
My Fake Boyfriend (2022)
The new real
No pun intended - I had no idea what I was going to embark (journey/watching wise), so if you already know more than this being a rom-com (as they call them), I think you have at least an inkling if this is something you want to watch! If this is not something you want to watch (I mean the main character and his sexual orientation), that is more than fair enough.
Just don't hate on the movie, if you know what this will be about. It was not made for you, there are way more movies for you to watch. All that being said, there are quite a few cliches here and you have to dig the at least sometimes silly humor. It does have charm though and is well told (editing wise). The acting is decent too ... so if you do not have issues beforehand, you may at least find this entertaining ...
Tee Yod (2023)
Horrible ... (good?)
No pun intended - calling a horror movie horrible should be a badge of honor, no? Of course if you watch this, you have to like horror movies - and if you like them, you may be aware of some of the cliches and the traps (story wise) a movie can fall on (or through).
This was quite visceral ... and it does have quite a few scenes that I thought would be "fake" (dream like) scenes ... that actually happened in the movie! I respect that - the effects are really good - though may be a bit too much for viewers who may be sensitive about these things. Know yourself and know your limits - there are way worse (or better?) movies when it comes to violence and blood - but this still has quite a few gruesome scenes.
What I did not know: there seems to be a sequel ... I reckon that makes sense .... I might even watch it, once it arrives at Netflix.
King of Stonks (2022)
Bad to worse
The enemy you know - or the king you kind of can control and all that. No pun intended - and not exactly what I meant with my summary line. Our main character here is quite clever - and while he does morally questionable things, he is able to win some people over with being sweet and seemingly an overall nice guy.
What also helps is the fact that he is side by side with this other guy who is over the top evil. So I am not aware of a real life incident that this is referring to. But it very well may be a collection of things. You can see how this can play out in the real world. Maybe not every little thing that we see ... but the overall sentiment. As the beginning of the show is saying: you are either on top or ... on the receiving end ... I am putting it mildly not to offend anyone I reckon. The show does not care for your feelings - so if you feel sensitive about certain things ... and like a good guy/gal to root for ... well this may not be the show for you ...
The Idea of You (2024)
Fairy tale meet real life
No pun intended - I would not call myself the biggest fan of romantic movies. I am however a big Anne Hathaway fan - she is just amazing! In every sense - but the movie she chose is helping a lot! The script is tight and switching the age gap, making the woman the older one ... a stroke of genius.
But this is not just about the two ... let's call them lovers! It is about society .. and about family! About how we still have not ... well we still are hypocrites in society when it comes to the age gap thing. First of all: if people love each other ... let them be! If you have some concerns - some real ones - go ahead and name them or advice anyone you think needs help.
But what is happening, is not advice, it is shaming .. it is being hurtful to others. And while this is a fairy tale of sorts and has quite a bit of comedy in it (and so much charm - yes by yours truly ... named Anne Hathaway), there is a lot of criticism ... listen carefully (not just to the songs).
A nice little bit by the way: there is a tik tok dance star in this, that I have seen do incredible and amazing dance moves over the last couple of years. Heritage from Ukraine as he revealed himself. He is just a background dancer in the movie, but a nice touch. And maybe he even helped with the choreography in the movie ... a little nugget for those in the know I reckon.
The story does concentrate on the two leads ... and it does a great job ... you can feel the love (the dream), but you can also see and feel the issues ... not everything has to be spelled out ... the movie does a great job keeping us on our toes ... and we know it can go either way ... will love conquer all or is reality too harsh?
James Dean (2001)
Live life to the fullest
Well was he though? No pun intended, it does not feel like it if you watch this. And I kind of wish I had read upon James Dean before I watched the movie. I think if you know more about him, about his nature, about his psychology and about his family ... well some of that is being shown in the movie, but you will know what to expect.
Allegedly DiCaprio declined the role - or did not want to do it. Interesting if true, I reckon he has other things lined up. Because the role had quite a lot to offer - and I don't mean money wise, but character and story wise. Also playing an icon too. James Franco does an incredible job by the way ... he is amazing. As are many other people who play real people ... it's a bit of a testament of time ... slow paced but still good to say the least.
Three Ages (1923)
For the ages
Well I know you might go "duh" ... but hey still no pun intended, no matter what. Cliches very much intended though - from the movie that is. Buster Keaton - yes Charlie Chaplin is on more minds than he is - maybe that will change - talking of right now and the recent past at least.
Someone compared this to Mel Brooks History of the World Part 1 (by the way the joke is on us, Mel did a show that I think is called Part 2, looking forward to watching this hopefully sometimes soon) .. and I think it is a fair comparison of sorts. This obviously being way older - and yet it does have things that are still relevant or that you can relate to. Like identity cards - well stone tablets in this case.
There are also the age old rich versus poor storylines ... and the family building ... meaning of life and all that. Something for everyone ... and funny at that.
Prélude (2019)
Main feast
No pun intended - I am not sure if it helps to be fluent in the piano (read music) world. But I reckon it probably wouldn't hurt. Comparing this to black swan (this being a mirror to that just not in the world of ... well ballet, but piano) kind of makes sense.
The acting is quite good, the pace is quite slow to say the least. I have seen more engaging movies with similar themes and topics. But this still has the script and the actors going for it. Again, you have to have the patience for it and you have to like dramas with a bit of a darker touch. Anyone who wants to be on top (no pun intended) has to sacrifice things ... sometimes that may be sanity (of the viewer? You decide) ...
Bloodmoon (1990)
Round and round
It goes as they say. So no pun intended - if you watch one slasher, you have seen them all. Well that is not entirely true, but I reckon the original slashers do share quite the similar DNA to say the least. This is not different, with quite the predictable story, maybe some shock twist (but not for most) ... it does have good effects for sure.
So depending on what you expect, what you want to see, you will either be fully satisfied or might be a bit underwhelmed. The acting is ok too, considering the genre this plays in. It has not aged too well in some regards, but the video (cinematography) overall looked quite good (don't expect anything fancy of course). I did not have any music theme stuck in my head, but I did not expect to have another Halloween theme ... so there is that. A fun little slasher that could ... or can.
The End We Start From (2023)
New old beginnings
No pun intended - giving birth allegedly is almost as painful as having a man flu - I am kidding of course! I may have lost some reader I reckon, but if you know my reviews and/or have a sense of humor, I am glad to continue. With a more serious tone - which is what is actually is fitting when it comes to the movie.
Not really a movie that has jokes. It does start out quite mellow. We see our main character (very pregnant) - and as they say, a lot of things happen. Before the baby is born, they say the water breaks ... well ... now I could make a pun here, but I think it already made itself.
That all said, the movie has great performances and I think shows how people react or would likely react to something like that happening. There is humanity, there is also surviving at all cost ... there is resigning, there is hope. There is everything one can think of, that has to do with life.
This is a drama, but it does contain quite a bit of horror. Not least during the birth scene - a very explicit scene, even if just for a few frames (second?) ... that may be too much for some. It was for some in the cinema - they left.
You have to know what you are letting yourself into. Great cinematography and a tight story ... with some interesting little cameos ... I don't know what I would have done in a similar situation to be honest ... what about you? A relationship put to through a test ... with not just one rainy day ... (had to)
Jolly Roger (2022)
Roger not so Jolly
Actually the movie starts with the multiple definitions of the title (words) ... so no pun intended with my riffing on that. So I reckon this is another Nollywood output/effort I kind of got tricked into watching. Now I am exaggerating a little bit - I saw this on Netflix and just watched it as it was available, so no one really "tricked" me.
That said, the movie is a nice little drama I reckon, but also has all the flaws I see in the low budget efforts that mostly make their way onto our screens. Acting is mostly subpar, stories seem flawed at best - but that is me, if you are a fan, I am not trying to knock you down or tell you anything about your taste. I am happy for you - but I think even a fan can understand that this is not for everyone ... rather for a few - and it has to be pointed out. Weird ending too - but maybe that was only my feeling.
