Titans (I) (2018–2023)
7/10
Surprisingly good at first, but it's fading year by year.

I'm writing this partway into Season 4. I really didn't expect to like this show as much as I have. I knew little to nothing about the Titans coming in.

In season 1, the story arc revolves around Raven who is the most interesting character anyway. Everyone else's arc this season is about bringing them into her orbit. The show fits together well, the acting performances are ... mostly pretty good. I don't love the actress playing Starfire. But that might also be because Starfire felt the most out of place in the season with her arc making very little sense. It's hard sometimes to separate the acting from the writing of a character.

I was particularly surprised by how much the show made me like Dick Grayson. Batman's annoying little side piece somehow actually seems...interesting. At first, he feels kind of cliche like 'Lets take Robin and make him dark...no DARKER!' and I did alot of eye rolling, but as the season and series carries forward, it kind of feel earned.

Season 2 declines somewhat from season 1, but that feels inevitable. The cast swells even more, but while I disliked Superboy, Hawk & Dove's expanded role really worked, as did Wonder Girl. But the villain feels like one of those that is TOO perfect. The progression of most of the characters feels choppoer.

Season 3 really falls apart. Raven is almost completely absent. Which is a big deal as she's the most interesting character to me. Really, every character gets demonstrably less interesting this season...or dead. Let me take a moment to congratulate the show for actually killing characters. This is a good move and is something superhero shows need to do more of because too many of them have zero stakes.

But Season 3 is generally poor with one massive exception - the villain. Scarecrow really saves the season from being DREADFULLY boring. Everytime he's on screen, he sparkles. But it just wasn't enough.

Season 4, so far, has been utterly awful. The show is diving hard into magic, which makes me think we're going to get more Raven, but so far, she's been a side character. I'm not interested in any of the character plots happening. There are so many superhero cliches arising too. It's headed in a bad direction.

Overall, I'd say that if you're a fan of the superhero content, Titans is worth your time. It's better than average. But if season 1 doesn't do it for you, stop immediately because it definitely peaked in season 1.
