Breathe: A sci-fi studying character & soul; humanity in its darkest days

Not sure why so many people are rating this film so poorly. I have my suspicions why, but nevertheless; definitely an interesting premise for a film. Some very nice sets and locations used, the directing and camera-work was simple, but nicely conveyed the feeling of the bleakness of the world; and there were some really nice shots later during a certain scene with Worthington and Jovovich, strengthened deeply by some of Quvenzhané Wallis's best acting throughout this film. ( trying to be spoiler-free... )

I watch a lot of sci-fi and it is nice to see the primary cast being POC and nice to see some lesser-known actors taking the forefront. Diverse casting is something that definitely needs to be improved in this genre specifically. Quvenzhané Wallis (Zora) and Jennifer Hudson (Maya) had some nice onscreen chemistry, and it's always a pleasure to see Common's engaging acting.

Others complain about the believability and logistics of the world/scenario, and while it's definitely not the best sci-fi film you could watch right now, the focus felt, to me, to be more on the actual characters than the science itself; by no stretch was the writing perfect but the characters never felt unrealistic and the danger never felt without weight.

The pacing was okay, but some parts felt like they could have been cut down in favour of more the character focused scenes, but who doesn't like a bit of action?

Most definitely not the 1 star that other reviewers are currently giving, though as I say, I suspect there may be other "reasons" for those reviews.

Overall a solid 5/10 and a nice introduction to some new faces in the genre & the industry.
