Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, two essential ingredients in the “Barbenheimer” phenomenon, will leave Barbieland and Los Alamos behind them as they team up for “The Fall Guy.” But will audiences turn up in force to see the “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” stars when their new action comedy debuts this weekend?
Well, “The Fall Guy” isn’t going to hit those films’ box office heights, but it should have no trouble topping charts as it kicks off the summer movie season. The film is expected to earn north of $30 million, with some rival studio executives pegging the opening at between $35 million to $40 million. The catch is that movie wasn’t cheap to produce, boasting a healthy budget of $130 million, so “The Fall Guy” will need strong word-of-mouth if it’s going to leg it out on the long path to profitability. It will also need to do well overseas. “The Fall Guy...

Chris Hemsworth is quite happy about not playing the hero in George Miller’s upcoming “Mad Max: Fury Road” prequel movie “Furiosa.” The action tentpole casts Hemsworth as the villainous Dementus, a sociopathic warlord who steals the title character from her home as a child. It’s a far cry from his Marvel superhero Thor, who Hemsworth has played in four standalone movies and several more “Avengers” films. That’s precisely why the actor was hungry for the part.
“Yeah, it was a real departure, and it was nice. … I was about to say it was nice not to wear a cape, but… I did have a cape in this film,” Hemsworth recently told Entertainment Weekly. “And it’s red — or it becomes red eventually, as well. The absurdity of that.”

Citing conversation with coworkers about how they previously struggled to get by on “poverty” wages, usher and negotiations committee member Rachel Oshiro said, “I’m hopeful that this change will not only help my coworkers feel more financially secure, but feel confident in their work/employment moving forward.”
THR has reached out to the Hollywood Pantages Theatre for comment.

Victoria Justice, best known for her starring role on Nickelodeon’s “Victorious,” recently said on SiriusXM’s “Hits 1 LA with Tony Fly and Symon” that her upcoming role in the movie “Depravity” required her to film her first sex scene. The experience was “uncomfortable” but the crew pulled it off with “taste.”
“My first day on set I had my first ever sex scene. I’m like, ‘Really, guys? We’re gonna schedule this for the first day? Cool. Thanks for that,'” Justice said. “It is uncomfortable. I was actually very nervous about it and totally anxious about the entire situation, and I was like, ‘Did I make the wrong choice? I don’t know if I should do this.'”
Justice stressed that she “had a lot of faith and trust in our director,” adding: “He made me feel very comfortable about it and said, ‘Listen, I’ll show it to you beforehand.

It’s not always easy to find out which movies are hitting theaters each week, especially after the Hollywood strikes led to many release date changes. With the WGA and actors strikes resolved and summer blockbusters starting to roll in, May is filled with both big budget flicks and new indie releases.
Premiering May 3 is David Leitch’s “The Fall Guy,” an action comedy about a disgraced stuntman who must find the missing star of his ex-girlfriend’s blockbuster starring Ryan Gosling, Emily Blunt, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Hannah Waddingham. Also hitting theaters is “Tarot,” a horror movie about a naive group of friends and a tarot reading gone wrong starring Olwen Fouéré, Avantika, Jacob Batalon and Humberly González. Two films getting limited releases this week are A24’s “I Saw the TV Glow,” a horror drama about two teenagers’ bond over a supernatural TV show that is mysteriously canceled, and “Evil Does Not Exist,...

Jerry Seinfeld had lofty dreams for his film directorial debut. The comedian said on Tuesday he wanted to cast Daniel Day-Lewis as a sugar drug lord in his Netflix Pop-Tart comedy Unfrosted.
“We have a sugar drug lord who controls all the world’s sugar, his name is El Sucre,” Seinfeld explained during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live. “I wanted Daniel Day-Lewis to play it like Daniel Plainview from There Will Be Blood,” a reference to Day-Lewis’ Oscar-winning performance as a ruthless oilman during the 19th and 20th century Southern California oil boom.
(There Will Be Blood is one of three Oscars that Day-Lewis has won; he was also knighted by the British monarchy in 2014.)
Unfrosted co-writer Spike Feresten previously mentioned the Day-Lewis dream to ScreenRant, saying, “We would watch There Will Be Blood, and that end scene, where they’re beating each other up with bowling pins, all...

A Monday afternoon FaceTime with Sandra Lee quickly turns into a shopping intervention. Anybody who wants to lower their grocery bill, says the Semi-Homemade Cooking host, needs a Costco membership and an affinity for Trader Joe’s. When I counter that the crowds at the latter are a real turn-off, she’s having none of it. “You just have to get up early and go when they open,” she instructs. “Same with Costco.”
We are speaking on the occasion of her new series, Roku’s Dinner Budget Showdown (out May 3). It’s her first fully fledged TV show since Sandra’s Money Saving Meals ended in 2012 when Lee turned her attention to working alongside then-partner and then-Governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo. But this return for Lee, long an evangelist of stretching a dollar in the kitchen, seemed inevitable. Recent headlines about skyrocketing grocery costs are like the Bat-Signal for Lee.

Dan Schneider has sued Investigation Discovery for defamation over his portrayal in Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV, accusing the company of falsely implying that he sexually abused children who worked on the Nickelodeon series he created and ran.
Schneider, in a lawsuit filed on Wednesday in Los Angeles Superior Court, says his depiction in the five-part docuseries is a “hit job.” While it’s true that two child sexual abusers worked on network shows, he says he had “no knowledge of their abuse,” condemned it and “was not a child sexual abuser himself.”
“But for the sake of clickbait, ratings, and views — or put differently, money — Defendants have destroyed Schneider’s reputation and legacy through the false statements and implications that Schneider is exactly that,” the lawsuit says.
Warner Bros. Discovery, which distributed the project on Max, and producers Maxine Productions and Sony Pictures Television are also named in the complaint.

Alfred Molina has gone viral for sharing an emotional story to Vanity Fair about his father, who never vocally supported his son’s acting career. Molina once had the chance to become the manager of a restaurant for a higher salary. He turned it down to pursue the arts, which baffled his father. This was long before Molina became a Tony and BAFTA-nominated actor, plus an iconic movie villain thanks to Doctor Octopus in Sam Raimi’s “Spider-Man 2.”
“When I was very young, my dad got me a job as a waiter in the restaurant where he was working. If I say so myself, I was a good waiter to the point where the management offered me the chance to do a two-week management training course,” Molina said. “I turned it down because I got an acting job. Chloe Fineman gets into the “Dua spirit” with help from Dua Lipa herself in this week’s Saturday Night Live promo.
In the clip, Lipa is preparing for her first time as both host and performer at Studio 8H. Fineman approaches the pop star, showing off her impression of the pop star but butchers the lyrics to Lipa’s hit “Levitating.”
“If you wanna run away with me, we can play hide and seek first. Count to five,” the SNL star sings.
“That’s hilarious,” says Lipa. “Who was it?”
When Fineman tells her it’s meant to be an impression of the singer herself, Lipa offers some constructive criticism: “The lyrics maybe aren’t like 100 percent there. How about the dance moves? Like, maybe you’re just missing some of the dance moves?” But instead of nailing Lipa’s moves, Fineman breaks into tap dancing.
“Maybe it’s the look.

In all, there are 10 winners for 2024, each of whom will receive a $75,000 unrestricted prize as well as a residency at CalArts (which administers the prize on behalf of the Herb Alpert Foundation). The winners are chosen by a group of 15 distinguished panelists and are nominated by another group of respected names in the arts.
According to Irene Borger, the director of the Herb Alpert Awards in the Arts, what stands out among 2024’s cohort is how many winners work across genres and mediums.
“Over the years things have gotten more and more hybrid, so that even though there are these five categories, these five genres, one of the choreographers is coming out with a book, one of the filmmakers makes sculpture,...

I am not a scientist. I am an artist. I cannot begin to spout scientific data on what we will become once artificial intelligence outsmarts us. I can read the predictions of how our workforce will be replaced by AI. I can read the warnings from Stephen Hawking that go back as far as 1996 that it will not be climate change that will be our undoing but more likely, AI.
But what I can say with certainty is that what we all share as humans all over the planet and what connects us is the human experience made up of emotions that nothing programmed can ever experience. And it is what has documented our existence since the beginning of time in our hieroglyphics, and our paintings and our storytelling, and in our songs.

Harvey Weinstein is looking at a new trial in New York after Labor Day.
The former Hollywood mogul appeared in court in New York Wednesday for the first time since his 2020 rape conviction was overturned. Judge Curtis Farber set a May 29 hearing for discovery and for prosecutors to file a certificate of compliance. If the certificate is filed by that date, the judge anticipated that a trial will begin sometime after Labor Day.
Weinstein was wheeled into the courtroom in a wheelchair, wearing a blue suit with an American flag pin, after having been hospitalized in the days leading up to the hearing. He waved to the first row of attorneys as he was wheeled in and shook their hands as he was wheeled out. He appeared with his attorney Arthur Aidala, in front of a full audience, including Jessica Mann, who testified in the first New York trial.

Harvey Weinstein appeared in a Manhattan courtroom Wednesday, less than a week after the New York Court of Appeals overturned his 2020 rape conviction. It’s the first time the former movie producer has been seen in public since he was convicted of rape in a Los Angeles court and sentenced to 16 years in prison in February 2023.
Weinstein was seated in a wheelchair and wheeled by a security guard into a courtroom packed with journalists, lawyers and other officials. Lawyer Gloria Allred and Weinstein accuser Jessica Mann were present in the room. Prosecutor Nicole Blumberg from the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office said they will seek a retrial in the fall.
“[Mann] wants everyone to know the truth, and the defendant may have power and privilege, but she has the truth,” Blumberg said, adding they “have every reason to believe” Weinstein will be convicted in a retrial.

At the end of its second season, “Hacks” seemed to have written itself into a corner. On the heels of a hit special, veteran stand-up Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) fired Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder), the young writer whose perspective helped push Deborah out of a yearslong creative rut. While harsh, the move was uncharacteristically selfless on Deborah’s part, cutting Ava and her valuable advice loose in an act of tough love. But even as forcing Ava to step out of her shadow showed Deborah’s growth, it also broke up the professional partnership that helped define the Max comedy and propel “Hacks” to acclaim.

Jerry Seinfeld’s Pop-Tart comedy Unfrosted debuted in Los Angeles on Tuesday, where its star-studded cast was also joined by a special guest heaping praise on the film.
Jay Leno — alongside wife Mavis — crashed The Hollywood Reporter‘s red carpet interview with Seinfeld, as he joked, “I’m so sick of these hard-hitting, controversial documentaries. Can’t somebody just make a comedy anymore? Everything is a teachable moment and, ‘Oh I learned this.’ I just want to come and laugh.”
Seinfeld teased, “Because you’re not smart enough to learn anything,” as the friends of 45 years laughed, and Leno declared that the movie “is exactly what America needs right now, it’s going to be a really funny movie.”

The mansion, sitting atop a hill in Westchester County, New York, could be mistaken for any number of homes in the area, save for one little, er, big, thing.
In the driveway, feet from the front door, there is the battered severed head of a giant Sentinel, one of the antagonists to the X-Men.
The house, overlooking rolling hills north of New York City, was until recently a residential home. For a few months however, Airbnb is taking it over, turning the home into a recreation of the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning, as featured specifically in the Marvel Animation series X-Men ’97.
That includes an interior that has been meticulously hand-painted so as to appear two-dimensional, as in the cartoon, with the bedrooms, Professor X’s office, Beast’s lab, and even a “danger room” available for guests to explore.

It turns out that Anna Sawai, the breakout star of the hit FX series Shogun, might have broken out even sooner had she not been denied an audition for a dream project.
The 31-year-old former J-Pop singer, speaking with The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, revealed that she was forced to turn down an audition for the part of Katana in the 2016 film Suicide Squad — which was eventually played by Karen Fukuhara — because the company behind Faky, the girl group to which she then belonged, forbid it.
In 2006, Sawai auditioned for and was signed by Avex, one of Japan’s major entertainment companies, which operates a music and dance boot camp in the hope of turning out J-Pop stars. “After the training — multiple years of training — you are either lucky and join a group, or debut as a solo singer, or you’re gone,” she explained.

Eva Mendes is happy she had kids in her 40s, three years after she met her now-husband Ryan Gosling.
In a conversation with People, the actress recounted the public reaction to her being pregnant at 40 and how she couldn’t have imagined being a mother at any other point in her life.
“When I was 40, it was a big deal for people when I was pregnant, and it wasn’t for me,” Mendes said. “And then I was 42 and I was pregnant with my second one and people were like, ‘Oh my God, you’re going to be so tired. That’s why people have kids in their 20s.’ I was like, that’s the most sorry, asinine thing I’ve ever heard.”
Mendes and Gosling met on the set of The Place Beyond the Pines in 2011 and have two daughters: Esmeralda Amada, 9, and Amanda Lee, 8.

Owen Elliot-Kugell, the daughter of late The Mamas & the Papas member Cass Elliot, is setting the record straight on her mother’s death in her new memoir, My Mama, Cass.
In July 1974, Cass passed away in London from a heart attack when Elliot-Kugell was 7-years-old, dying in her sleep at age 32. However, an urban legend spread claiming that the singer had died from choking on a ham sandwich.
“In my younger years, when people would talk to me about my mom, it was always about the stupid sandwich,” Elliot-Kugell told People magazine. “I would go over to kids’ houses after school and eventually one of their parents would ask me, ‘Did your mom really die choking on a ham sandwich?’ First of all, the chutzpah to say that to a child is just crazy but it happened a lot. So I felt it was my duty to figure out what that story was all about.

Anna Sawai is still processing the degree to which her life has changed because of Shōgun, the smash-hit FX show on which she plays Lady Mariko, and as a result of which she has become an Emmy frontrunner (for best actress in a limited or anthology series or a TV movie) and is rapidly making her way towards Hollywood’s A-list.

Many things weigh on Aza Holmes, the anxious protagonist of Hannah Marks’ Turtles All the Way Down, but none more than the existence of bacteria. Thoughts of these microorganisms — the ease with which they can infiltrate a body and the chances of infection — plague her. She worries about a wound on her left middle finger, a slit in the skin she can’t let heal. Picking at the sore relieves her obsessive thought spirals, but it also activates a new round of worries about contamination, disease and the impossibility of safety.
Aza, played by Isabela Merced (Madame Web) has anxiety and Ocd, conditions that make the already challenging experience of high school even more difficult. Turtles All the Way Down, which Marks (Don’t Make Me Go) adapted from John Green’s novel of the same name, is a mostly moving portrait of how one teenager navigates her mind’s unruly terrain.

The thin line between cheating death and chasing it appears to have been smudged, repeatedly, by maverick video journalist Margaret Moth, the subject of first-time filmmaker Lucy Lawless’ fascinating documentary “Never Look Away.” At least, that’s the impression we’re left with at the end of this compact yet complex portrait of a singularly and aggressively unconventional war correspondent who inspired equal measures of admiration and anxiety among her friends, colleagues and lovers throughout her 20 years of assignments in the world’s trouble spots — Baghdad, Sarajevo, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Zaire, you name it, she was there — for CNN.
Something of an enigma even to those closest to her — “I never fully understood what was ticking inside of her” is a comment typical of responses by interviewees questioned by an off-camera Lawless — Moth was fond of proudly proclaiming, “I live life to the fullest.” But it was a life she repeatedly risked by going places,...

The Writers Guild of America called a strike one year ago today, declaring that the streaming boom had created an existential crisis for writers.
The WGA got most of what it wanted from the strike, though it took almost five months for the studios and streamers to come around. But as the boom has gone bust, writers now face a different kind of crisis.
For most, it’s harder to find work.
“There’s less things being made,'” said Justin Halpern, a WGA board member and co-showrunner of ABC’s “Abbott Elementary.” “If you have been able to secure employment as a writer during this time of contraction, you are making a living wage. But the problem is, there’s not a lot being made right now.”

The former 15-year UTA exec and partner Jim Meenaghan has been tapped as COO of Greg Silverman’s Stampede Ventures.
Meenaghan, who served as co-head of independent film and head of MP business affairs at UTA, will oversee day-to-day operations at the studio under founder and CEO Silverman. “Stampede Ventures is the perfect opportunity for me, the timing could not be better. I’m very excited to join such an ambitious company committed to making great, commercial content with a remarkable executive team and culture already in place,” Meenaghan said in a statement on Wednesday.
In 2018, UTA promoted Meenaghan to co-head the independent film group with partner Rena Ronson after he had been with the agency for nine years and leading the motion picture business affairs group. Having stepped down from UTA at the end of 2023, Meenaghan joins Stampede after it unveiled a partnership with Film AlUla studios, while also...

David Leitch’s action-comedy The Fall Guy isn’t the normal kind of stunt Hollywood usually relies on to herald the start of the summer box office, but these aren’t normal times.
Outside of the pandemic era, that job belonged to superhero tentpoles, and specifically Marvel Studios fare (including all four Avengers movies). And Marvel returned to do the honors last year when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 debuted to $118.4 million over the May 5-7 weekend. But Hollywood was thrown off kilter again by last year’s labor strikes, with the release calendar put in disarray. Then there’s the not so-little-issue of superhero fatigue, which has forced both Marvel Studios and DC Entertainment to regroup, although Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine should a long way to aiding Marvel.

With more than a dozen high-profile venues in their hospitality portfolio (Delilah, Bootsy Bellows, Bird Streets Club), The h.wood Group’s John Terzian and Brian Toll are the go-to-guys for L.A.’s coveted tables, the masterminds behind A-lister nights out and the gatekeepers of exclusive events surrounding Super Bowl and Paris Fashion Week. Now, they are harnessing the industry connections they have amassed over two decades to create h.wood Media, a multimedia production arm of their hospitality company.
Partner Jeremy Allen, who helped h.wood Media raise its first fund, oversees the film and TV slate from development to studio projects. They are working on projects with Kid Cudi, Machine Gun Kelly, Post Malone, and more. Former HBO executive Emma Slivers serves as director of development.
The multi-strategy vertical grew from a collaboration between Allen, Toll and Terzian on 2022’s They Call Me Magic, an Emmy-nominated Apple+ docuseries about Magic Johnson.

Sometimes, it’s how we learn a character we’ve been following for several episodes has been killed. At others, it’s the only good look we get at people whose names we never even learn before they’re slaughtered.
Always, it’s hard to bear. Their eyes bore right through the camera, their expressions unreadable and their thoughts unknowable. Each stare nonetheless lands as a plea — for us to notice, to remember, to not look away — and the Peacock miniseries takes seriously the responsibility to bear witness.
