Greg Berlanti and Netflix are going for a ride in the Mystery Machine.
The streaming giant is near a deal for a live-action TV series based on the beloved Hanna-Barbera animated cartoon Scooby-Doo. The project has a script-to-series commitment at Netflix, meaning if the script is well received, it would trigger a straight-to-series order for what is considered a live-action update of the classic cartoon.
Reps for Netflix, producers Warner Bros. Television and Berlanti Productions declined to comment, as a deal has not yet formally closed.
Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg — who previously adapted Cowboy Bebop for Netflix and High Fidelity for Hulu — are attached to pen the script and exec produce via their Midnight Radio banner’s André Nemec and Jeff Pinkner. Berlanti and his Berlanti Productions partner Sarah Schechter will exec produce alongside the company’s Leigh London Redman. Berlanti Productions’ Jonathan Gabay and Midnight Radio’s...

In Baby Reindeer, Donny never asks Martha to stop calling him by the titular name. It’s a cute moniker, but its charm is hollow: Martha is Donny’s older stalker, making the pet name more infantilizing than sweet.
But Donny sees it differently. Kind of.
The new Netflix limited series explores the nuanced complexities of Donny and Martha’s relationship, which, for Donny, reveals his equally nuanced sexuality. The portrait of their dynamic, and the attractions that drive it, is unlike any on television, transcending May-December, adult-baby, and dirty-talk kinks to unearth something fresher: a sexuality not defined by appearances or gender but an artist’s deeply buried trauma and unquenchable thirst for affirmation.

Jason Priestley has been able to embrace his love of hockey through his recent projects including Börje: The Journey of a Legend. The six-episode biopic series on Viaplay centers on the late Hall of Famer Börje Salming (Valter Skarsgård) and his fish-out-of-water journey. He went from small-town Sweden to playing for the Toronto Maple Leafs with the show chronicling the physical and personal struggles he faced. Priestley took on the role of respected talent scout Gerry McNamara, who brought Salming over and put the gears in motion for what was to come. The 54-year-old Canadian also directed a documentary called Offside: The Harold Ballard Story on the polarizing team owner Harold Ballard, who in Börje is played by A.C. Peterson. You can probably unpack that Pb&j, chips, and juice box: It sounds like “John Mulaney & The Sack Lunch Bunch” isn’t coming back to Netflix — or even to Comedy Central.
Mulaney has called the (excellent) Netflix variety series for children his “favorite thing I ever did,” a sentiment he echoed on “My Next Guest with David Letterman and John Mulaney” — the episode of Letterman’s long-form interview show premiered April 30, 2024 on Netflix.
Letterman asked Mulaney what that ranking suggests for the future.
“I loved doing it and, you know, Netflix was like, ‘Oh, cool, you gonna do standup again?’” Mulaney said.
Mulaney’s line got a laugh from the Chicago audience, but it didn’t sound like a joke. In the comic’s retelling, it is clear the streamer had pretty quickly moved on from “The Sack Lunch Bunch” and focused on the comedian’s bread and butter: stand-up.

The cast and crew of The Cleaning Lady are still grieving the loss of star Adan Canto. The 44-year-old died in January 2024 following a private battle with cancer, and this tragic loss forced the show to completely rework its Season 3 plan. The original plan was always to dive into Arman’s familial backstory, as we’ve seen in Season 3 with the addition of Ramona (Kate del Castillo) and Jorge (Santiago Cabrera), but Arman himself had to be written out. Filming the episode that revealed Arman’s fate was a “painful” experience for star Élodie Yung. “I certainly have never had to do something like this,” Yung tells TV Insider. “As an actor, I certainly use my personal life and feelings for a character I have to portray. This is a very different thing.” The Cleaning Lady Season 3 began filming after Canto’s death, but not long after. They’re all...

Jerry Seinfeld thinks stand-up comedy is booming because fans are bored with the current state of television comedy, which he says has been sanitized by “P.C.” culture. In an interview with The New Yorker, the 70-year-old Seinfeld co-creator claimed TV comedy is an endangered species due to “the extreme left and P.C. crap, and people worrying so much about offending other people.” “[In decades past, people] just expected there’ll be some funny stuff we can watch on TV tonight,” Seinfeld said. “Well, guess what — where is it? This is the result of the extreme left and P.C. crap, and people worrying so much about offending other people.” He argued that people are now turning to stand-up comics “because we are not policed by anyone. The audience polices us. We know when we’re off track. We know instantly and we adjust to it instantly.” “But when you write a script and...

Normally logistical issues like space rentals and permitting are meant to be invisible to the audience, left in the furthest background of any TV show. But Season 4 of “We’re Here” is as much about the struggles of making the series as it is about the drag performances the show’s queens put on in different parts of the United States. The HBO series not only introduced a new cast of queens this year but changed its filming approach so that it could go where it was needed most: the states imposing drag bans and making the pursuit of happiness difficult for their own LGBTQ communities.
The biggest shift, according to showrunner Peter LoGreco, was the amount of time that “We’re Here” spent in a given location. In past seasons, the series moved from state to state for each episode. But given how legislatively hostile the environments in Tennessee and Oklahoma...

When Imogene is tasked with extricating a woman named Adilah El Idrissi (an outstanding Yumna Marwan) from a Turkish/Syrian refugee camp and enticing her to disclose her secrets, the spy finds herself analyzing her own moral code and a past shrouded in riddles.

Amid Paramount Global’s removal of Bob Bakish as CEO and the ongoing uncertainty of a company sale, it was business as usual for the first quarter at the media conglomerate — which included a $1.3 billion charge for content write-offs as well as layoffs.
Paramount Global reported Q1 2024 earnings Monday, announcing Bakish’s exit and the installation of an unusual three-in-a-box “Office of the CEO”: CBS’s George Cheeks, Chris McCarthy, Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios and Paramount Media Networks, and Paramount Pictures’ Brian Robbins. The committee of three made brief remarks on the earnings call but didn’t take questions from analysts.

Committed is one word you could use to describe Tony Khan. The Aew owner and CEO wore a neck brace during the NFL Draft, selling an onscreen attack by Jack Perry and members of the villainous faction The Elite on Dynamite. Khan’s dad Shahid Khan, Jacksonville Jaguars owner, even appeared to express concern for his son at the end of the April 24 episode. It was the first time in the five-year history of the company that Tony was part of a physical angle on the show. In the spirit of Andy Kaufman and wanting to capitalize on the buzz, he kept the story going during multiple high-profile appearances during the NFL Draft. Tony Schiavone updated viewers on Khan’s condition during the April 27 episode of Aew’s Collision. The story given was that he suffered multiple head and neck injuries, and doctors advised him not to travel. That until...

A great buddy comedy that bridges its generation gap with smart show-business satire, Hacks’ worth-waiting-for third season (delayed a year by the Hollywood strikes) finds new purpose in the undying ambition of its leading lady, legendary comic Deborah Vance. Though she cut loose her young comedy-writer protégée Ava (Hannah Einbinder) a year ago for their own professional good, Deborah reels Ava back into her glamorous orbit when an opportunity arises: a late-night talk show gig for which she was passed over 40 years ago. “I need to be sharper and funnier than I’ve ever been,” Deborah declares. And because they somehow can’t quit each other despite their temperamental, sartorial and demographic differences, Ava puts just about everything on hold—a relationship, a dream writing job at a Last Week Tonight–style political comedy show—to support her idol, who’s also her tormentor. Deborah is one demanding piece of work,...

Tomorrow marks 30 years since the death of Ayrton Senna, the legendary Brazilian Formula One driver killed in a grisly crash on the track. He’s as close to a god in the country as any man not named Pelé, yet save for the brilliant 2010 documentary “Senna,” his life has never been depicted on screen.
Netflix will be the first to try with its upcoming scripted series “Senna.” With any luck, Senna will not just be an icon in Brazil but the face of Netflix’s enormous expansion into the Latin American market.
“Senna” showrunner Vicente Amorim says his series is one of the biggest productions in Latin American history and uses an almost entirely Brazilian crew, something that demanded a massive investment in the region from Netflix. No one will say how much the “Senna” budget is, but the production values and the re-creation of 13 F1 tracks and models of...

After revealing behind the scenes details about how he helped bring an all-star group of musicians together to make the Grammy-winning smash hit charity single “We Are the World” in the Netflix documentary “The Greatest Night in Pop,” Lionel Richie recently spoke to IndieWire about which of the participants he knows have watched the movie, and are still reeling from the down-to-the-wire recording session.
“Huey Lewis sat next to me while I’m watching the premiere, and he leaned over to me, and he said, ‘I don’t think we’re going to make it,’” the “American Idol” judge said at an event celebrating the reveal of the current season’s Top 10 finalists. “I said, ‘Huey, it’s 39 years ago. Jeopardy! contestants have shared some interesting anecdotes over the past 60 years, including Austin Rogers meeting the Dalai Lama and Meike Olin dating five men in one day. However, Ferdinand Percentie’s personal tale on Monday’s (April 29) episode is going to take some beating. And fans are wondering if it was the best anecdote ever. As reported by The Mirror, during the show’s anecdote section, Percentie revealed to host Ken Jennings that his grandmother inspired the hit Jimmy Buffett song “Cheeseburger in Paradise.” Percentie said his family comes from a small island in the Bahamas, Harbor Island, and “According to family lore, Jimmy Buffett came to the hotel/restaurant my grandma founded and [he] had a cheeseburger there. That was his inspiration to write Cheeseburger in Paradise.” Jennings was impressed, telling Percentie, “Your grandmother’s cheeseburgers were so good that he wrote a hit song about them. That is amazing.

In the coming months, British actors’ union Equity and producer trade body Pact are expected to kick off negotiations to thrash out new contracts that will cover the vast majority of U.K. TV and indie film. There’s going to be several major sticking points on the table, many that are near-identical to those that dominated the lengthy and fraught talks between SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP in the U.S. last year, not least secondary payments and the hot-button topic of AI.

When the trailer for The Idea of You first came out, many people mistakenly believed the rom-com is based on Harry Styles fan fiction. To be fair, it wouldn’t be the first time Hollywood looked to the One Direction singer for inspiration — Netflix’s After films, which are based on the books by Anna Todd, have direct roots in the author’s Wattpad fics about him.
But unlike After, The Idea of You (which premieres May 2 on Prime Video) was never fan fiction. Based on the 2017 novel of the same name by Robinne Lee, the film centers on 40-year-old single mom Solène Marchand (Anne Hathaway) who unexpectedly embarks on a whirlwind romance with 24-year-old Hayes Campbell (Nicholas Galitzine), the dreamy lead singer of popular boy band August Moon.

In anticipation of the upcoming Young Sheldon series finale, child star Iain Armitage teamed up with his older Big Bang Theory counterpart, Jim Parsons, for a promotional TikTok video. The video was shared on the official Young Sheldon TikTok page and shows Armitage testing out a “new filter” that he says “apparently shows you what it looks like when you grow up.” “I don’t know how accurate it is going to be, but let me try it out,” Armitage says while tapping on the screen. When the young actor moves his finger away from the screen, Parsons is standing in his place. “Hmm, I’m not sure about this,” Parsons says as he assesses the results of the filter. “Oh! It changes your voice, too… I don’t like it.” @youngsheldoncbs Yeah, we’re finally on TikTok bc we heard about these great filters… #YoungSheldon #filters #BigBangTheory #JimParsons @Iain...

Here’s a political reality that seems impossible to be unaware of—although recent evidence suggests otherwise:
If you are pulling out all the stops to rise to the top of the Veep sweepstakes in your party, and you decide that the most impressive thing on your resume is your penchant for gunning down puppies, you are not only likely to destroy your chances with millions of dog-owners, you are also signing up to be the human outline at the late-night firing range.
That thoroughly perforated figure you may have come across on TV late last night was the effigy of Kristi Noem, Governor of South Dakota, outspoken advocate of gun rights, and (apparently) pet cemeteries.
The story broke over the weekend: The governor, whose ardent pursuit of the second spot on the Republican ticket to Donald Trump has been widely publicized, recounts in her upcoming memoir a happy catalogue...

So, South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem murdered a puppy. Lest we here at LateNighter be accused of smearing the Republican Vice Presidential hopeful with the absolute worst thing anyone could imagine, it should be added that Noem herself bragged about killing said dog—a happy 14-month-old wirehaired pointer named Cricket—in the head after the pooch committed the apparently lethal sin of not being especially good at hunting. Oh, and since Noem was on a roll, the right-wing politician also went and fetched the family goat and dispatched that, too, impassively explaining in her forthcoming book that she then fielded her young daughter’s question, “Hey, where’s Cricket?” with, one can assume, a parent’s assurance that all creatures unable to...

There are grand prizes, and then there are Deal or No Deal Island-sized grand prizes. NBC’s newest game show, which premiered in February, is already poised to potentially make history in its inaugural season as the final four contestants stand to make more loot than anyone ever has in the history of game shows… as long as that last man or woman standing can best that sneaky banker, of course. On Monday’s episode of the Joe Manganiello-hosted series, titled “Are You Powerful?” the last five contestants in the game — including Survivor alum Rob “Boston Rob” Mariano, Stephanie Mitchell, Amy McCoy, Jordan Fowler, and Aron Barbell — made it through another grueling day in the sand, with Barbell finding himself facing the banker. Unfortunately for him, taking an offer of $1.199 million wasn’t nearly enough to beat his own case, which meant he made a “bad deal” and had to be sent home.
